Lunedi Lunacy

My father and brother listened to The Goon Show with an almost religious fervour every Friday night. My mother, ever the more practical one, would sniff that it was all very silly! And silly it was- a bizarre British radio show created by a group of mad geniuses: Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe, Michael Bentine and Spike Milligan.

By his own admission Milligan was the maddest of the lot. He was institutionalized several times when the effects of bi-polar disorder became too much to handle and he spoke openly about those times. Creatively he was the most versatile of the group: children's writer, author, playwright, musician, poet, environmental activist, campaigner against domestic violence, Irish nationalist. And he's was bloody funny.

I thought this little clip would be a fitting comment on last week's hospital visit:

And now for something naughty, Neddie!*

And to end on a note of total and utter political incorrectness (you've been warned so I don't want any indignant comments!)

*Goons fans will get the reference.
