Hibiscus
Our friend Betty Jean donated plants from her terrrace when she was moving. I've never had much luck with hibiscus but this one seems healthy and is now on its second set of blooms in a week.
It sounds like you are settling in, though I have to say I can't wait to hear about life in Rome, once everyone gets back from vacation. If you an Laurent haven't killed each other by now, it is probably a good sign that everything will work out fine.
