Well okay I has but not for the past three years - and two small bouts of flurries back in Roma don't count. But tonight at the Bremmer Pass I Has Seen Snow! And it was -9 on the station platform.
Brennero (Bremmer in German) is located 1,374 meters above sea level (around 4,500 ft) so it wasn't surprising that there was snow on the ground and a chill in the air. Surprisingly the streets here in Innsbruck - only 30 minutes away but 900 meters lower - are snowless. However at -7 its still cold - by Italian standards - and the forecast says snow is on the way. Guess I better button up my overcoat - or better still buy a better one!

Mercoledi Musicale
Okay I'm not doing this to upset any of my friends back home but we've been sweltering here in Italy for the past few weeks. Here in Rome it reached 39c yesterday and 38c today with more to come. Even late at night you can feel the heat radiating off those "romantic" cobblestones and if it cools down to 30c you're happy. By the seashore at Pesaro it was bearable but here in the city its just bloody miserable. In fact if you ask me "Its Too Darn Hot!"
I was looking for the movie version of this number from Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate as I recalled it became a big dance number for Ann Miller. But I came across this clip from the London 2001-2002 revival. In the original Broadway show the number featured a fairly minor character called Paul - here played by the very talented Nolan Frederick. They do say that the best way to fight to heat is to work but a sweat and boy does he work up a sweat!
And to my friends in North America - particularly in the East, sorry about the rain! Did I mention it was going to be 38c and sunny tomorrow... and Friday.. and Saturday... and okay I'll shut up now.

Spring Is Was In the Air
Last weekend was the first taste of spring here in Roma - Saturday was sunny, warm and very welcome after the damp, cold winter we've just been through. Long time inhabitants of the city complained that it had been the worst winter in decades. Torrential rains - at times almost tropical in nature - battered the city almost every day causing flooding, in one evening the Tiber rose more than 50 metres (150 ft) almost breaching its embankments. Sewers clogged with leaves left uncollected from the autumn overflowed, flooding intersections and underpasses killing at least two people.
Though the temperature only dipped below 0c on a few evenings the constant damp seeped into the buildings - all concrete and marble - and made it feel colder. So cooling in the heat of summer, marble floors can give you what we use to call chilblains in the dead of winter. And of course the heating systems in most buildings just weren't meant to deal with that sort of cold. Extra blankets were heaped on, sweaters worn and space heaters used, though sparingly because of the cost of electricity.
But last Saturday was a reminder that spring is just around the corner. And people were out doing what they do in warm weather - though many still bundled up just in case - strolling and lolling on the lawns and amongst the cherry trees in Villa Borghese. Some families were picnicking, others have family lunch in the eateries around the park. I did notice a fair number of "second bed" families - older father with young trophy wife and baby accompanied by the older off-spring of the "first bed." The young wives going to great pains to fawn over slightly wary step-children.
Many of the Nonni were out pampering favorite grandchildren - making sure that bonnets were in place, it may be sunny but a head left uncovered by a thoughtless young mother invites illness if not death. Young lovers were testing their previously housebound relationships to see if they would last in the glare of the sun. Groups of boys were practicing those shots that Roma should have played in last week's game cheered or, often jeered, by their young ladies.
And spring was evident on our balcony. Betty Jean's chamomile which has spent the winter looking like a dried up twig has begun to show tufts of fragrant green. And the first flower was a surprise. I have no idea where this little charmers came from but there are three or four stalks and this was the first to bloom.
But sadly, despite a not unpleasant week with the constant promise of spring in the area, winter came back this morning. Sharp cold winds - no doubt coming in from Milano - drove the temperatures down and winter coats were dawned again. As we waited for the train to Fiumicino on exposed Platform 25 we were happy that the forecast for Barcelona was sunny and warm.

He's It's Hot

Its been a real scorching few weeks here and the long range says the next two months will be more of the same. Since the second week in June temperatures have been averaging 35-36 with not a cloud in sight. Actually I lie, there has been the odd cloud but not a rain drop in sight. And though I've been doing my bit to conserve water (using the water from the air conditioning - turned low to save energy - to water the plants)- the public water taps are still running freely, as they have done since the First Republic. Romans take that as their entitlement - though the high calcium content of the otherwise pure water could account for the number of people with kidney stones.
Reading my friend EG this week I realized how much water we do drink here. We'll go through a 1.5 bottle between the two of us at dinner, the same at lunch. And if there's a large group for a meal its not unusual to go through five or six bottles. Of course where water is concerned there are two schools - correction three: frizante, naturale and legemente frizante. We're a frizante family ourselves though its funny how in most restaurants the minute the waiters hear our fractured Italian assume we'll have naturale.
Now you may have noticed that Roberto Bolle ad at the top of the post - it is not there for the lascivious reasons you first assumed and I am frankly offended that you would think that of me. Not at all - Robertolicious is the spokesperson for one of the many brands of water available here. And my good friend Opera Chic, in the spirit of civic duty, brought the new television ad campaign to our attention. A click on the ad above will take you to her posting and 90 seconds of Tchaikovsky, dancing, water and Roberto.
Is it me or is it getting hotter in here?

Strano, Multo Strano*
Woke up this morning to the gentle clunking of espadrilles on the floor above us and the pounding of rain against the window. The first escalated into a tap dance routine that our neighbour and her family seem wont to practice only on Saturday mornings; the second abated and the sun broke through with blinding brilliance - for five minutes. Then it was back to the pounding rain.
The weather here in Rome is strange, very strange*. At 1000 in the morning it can be bitingly cold, not the finger-numbing -35c I'm use to in Ottawa, but a bone gnawing damp hovering at zero. Three hours later its a pleasant 18c and the gloves, scarf and sweater you wore under your jacket comes off but the umbrella is up because that blue sky has turned gun-metal gray and its drizzling. This morning it was pounding rain at the back of the building but clear and sunny at the front - still haven't figured that one out. But at least the balcony plants are getting a good soaking.

So time to head out to the market:
Shopping list - check
Scarf - check
Wallet - check
Gloves - check
Change purse - check
Sweater - check
Cellphone - nope lost that in a cab on Wednesday - add to shopping list
Umbrella - check
Jacket - check
Okay lets go!
